As I read George Will's column today I actually laughed out loud at what he had to say. However, I was quietly crying inside. Commonsense has been abandoned. I could drone on about spending and borrowing being the cause, not the solution, to our problems, but that has been done. A lot. What makes me sad is how people in this country just don't get it. How can they not see the destruction of our nation and its economy for what it is? Capitalism works. It provides its own set of punishments and rewards. It incentivizes creativity, diligence, and productivity. It destroys blandness, laziness, and redundancy. It is the evolutionary mechanics of money. It weeds out the bad and encourages the good. More importantly, it is characterized by freedom, by liberty. Yes, we need a government. We need it to put selfish, lazy, and destructive people under the courthouse or under the pavement. We need it to count the marbles before the game to insure a good start. We do not need it to evenly divide the marbles after the play. We do not need government inviting our enemies to destroy us. We do not need the government to insult our friends. We do not need the government we have today. It is not what our founding fathers set out to produce. As Dennis Miller said, hook up a generator to Jefferson and Washington and Madison's graves, the spinning their doing could power the nation.
